The Relationship of Human Body & Far-Infrared Rays

The vibration energies of human body and the Far-Infrared rays are close in resemblance. The major compositions of cells are water, minerals and other high molecular weight polymer that constantly vibrate at the wavelengths of 5-30mm. Thus, accordingly to physics' theory, the human body is able absorb the far-infrared rays in large amount to restore its own energy.

Adidas Microbounce + FH008

I bought the latest Adidas running shoes besides my hotel in Shanghai.
I had a good run with them this evening on the treadmill. Seems a better feel than the top Nike range but from experience Nike shoes last longer.

I did 5.5 km on the treadmill in 30 mins, then swam 60 laps of the 20 meter pool in the fitness center at Jin Jiang Hotel. The fitness staff there at the end commented that I was very fit and asked me how to lose their belly.

careforchildren.com

Care For Children is a registered charity with tax free status in China. This organization works with the local and national government in China and have placed 200,000 orphans and underprivileged children into families.

Children living in institutions can never receive love, nurturing and care like they would in homes where there are parents as well as uncles, aunts and grandparents to support. Such love can never be found in orphanages. Care for Children works with the government agencies to place these children into homes.

Its office is in the outskirts of Beijing and was initially funded by the British government for 3 years and since it has been funded by donations. The staff here are dedicated and have a passion to make a difference to enrich the lives of orphans and underprivileged children.

Many aid donations never reach the needy but this team is at the ground level and I intend to support such a worthy organization. Though my contribution may be small at the moment, but it is not the magnitude but the desire to help out of love that counts. Go to their website and see their work (photos) during the recent earthquake in Chengdu.

Mission Statement
Care for Children exists to relieve hardship, distress and sickness in abandoned and orphaned children in China by the introduction of strategic initiatives in child care practice, at the request of, and in cooperation with, the Chinese national and local authorities.
Vision
Care for Children has a vision to see 1 million children in families.
Partners
China Social Work Association (CSWA) - approved and monitored by the Minitsry of Civil Affairs (MoCA).
Track record
Care for Children began work on it's first Foster Care pilot project with the Shanghai Civil Affairs in 1998.

Following the initial success in Shanghai, 3 other projects were started in Kunming, Yinchuan and Chengdu. In 2003 Robert Glover received the White Magnolia award from the Shanghai government in recognition for his service to the city. By this date, a total of 1400 children had been placed into families.

Recognising the value of Care for Children's project work, in 2003 the Ministry of Civil Affairs invited Care for Children to partner with CSWA on a nationwide project in the 14 poorest provinces of China.

In 2007 the project was further expanded to include 30 provinces. To date (May 2008), Care for Children has directly trained staff from over 200 orphanages. It is estimated that there are now over 200,000 children in families!

What is Far-Infrared Rays?

Sun rays can be divided into visible and invisible lights. Generally, visible light is composed of seven colors, which are the rainbow colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and purple.

An infrared ray is a type invisible light with wavelengths ranging from 0.75 to 1000 millimeters. Depending on the wavelength, the infrared ray can be roughly divided into near- infrared ray, mid-infrared ray, and far infrared ray.

Far-infrared ray with wavelengths ranging from 4 to 14 millimeters are beneficial to humans. Its energy and resonances resemblance to that of living tissues, and therefore, is called “reproductive light”. This reproductive light can activate and stimulate natural growth of cells in both animals and plants.

The Many Benefits of Collagen:

1. Skin Care:
Oral: As we age, the amount and functionality collagen in our body will reduce, leading to fine lines and wrinkles. Collagen supplementation helps to replenish the worn out collagen, stimulating the metabolism and renewal process, delaying the signs of natural aging, enhances skin elasticity and hydration. At the same time it activates the fibroblast cells in the dermis for self repair and regeneration.

Topical: Generally, when apply locally; ordinary collagen only has about 5% absorption rate. However, after treated with far-infrared rays, skin can absorb 5-10 times better than the untreated collagen. More over, far-infra-red implanted collagen can help to improve blood circulation, enhances penetration of collagen to the deeper skin layer to nourish and restore skin youthfulness.

2. Bone & Joint Health:
Collagen serves as cement in bone structures; helps lock and stabilize bone materials, prevents it from leaking and wasting. Scientific reports show that supplementation of collagen inhibits the degradation of collagen in bones and cartilages, increases bone density, reverses osteoporosis and speed up the recovery of fractures.

As for joint health, collagen improves elasticity and flexibility, promotes repair and regeneration of cartilages, helps to protects and slow down the degeneration of joint tissues.

3. Protects & Strengthens the Functions of Internal Organs:
Far-Infrared implanted collagen helps to stimulate and activate the functionality of individual cells and tissues.。

4. Enhances Natural Defense System:
Collagen improves the functions of phagocytes (a type of white blood cells), helps to enhance our body’s natural ability to defense itself.

The benefits of collagen are beyond words. However, in order to obtain its maximum benefits, our body must be able to absorb and utilize the collagen for protection and regeneration.

What is Collagen?

Collagen is one of the long, fibrous structural proteins. It made up approximately 6% of our total body weight, and is a very important protein. Tough bundles of collagen called collagen fibers are a major component of the extra cellular matrix that supports most tissues and gives cells structure from the outside, but collagen is also found inside certain cells.

Collagen has great tensile strength, and is the main component of fascia, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, bone and teeth. Along with soft keratin, it is responsible for skin strength and elasticity, and its degradation leads to wrinkles that accompany aging. It strengthens blood vessels and plays a role in tissue development. It is present in the cornea and lens of the eye in crystalline form.

The main function of collagen is to support skin and organ structures. It’s an essential raw material for repair and regeneration of skin cells in our body. Apart from water, 70% of the dermis is made up of collagen. It’s not only responsible for cells metabolism and renewal, but also has the ability to retain moisture, enhances skin hydration, leaves skin soft and supple.

Bone structures are another part of our body that consist large amount of collagen. About 80% of proteins containing materials in bones are collagen, representing 20% of total bone weight. Collagen in bones helps to retain calcium, reduces calcium loss, and enhances the elasticity of bone structures.

Currently, collagen is one of the most popular elements in plastic surgery, health supplements and skin care. It comes in the form of injection, oral preparation and topical application.

Persimmons

Last week I bought a box of persimmons as I love to eat them.
The last few had started to go soft.

My sister put the "about-to-rot" persimmons in the freezer as she noticed in Korea they have frozen persimmons for dessert. What turned out to be was very nice persimmon ice-cream frost-ball. It was very nice!

Persimmons contain significant concentrations of dietary fiber, minerals and phenolic compounds - all instrumental in fighting atherosclerosis, a leading cause of heart disease, heart attacks and stroke.

Persimmons are also rich in sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron and manganese.

According to Shela Gorinstein, Ph.D., a research associate with the department of medicinal chemistry in the School of Pharmacy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel, eating one medium-sized persimmon (about 100 grams) a day is enough to help fight atherosclerosis.

Aloe Vera

Earlier I had a picture of my leg all cut up by thorns from doing a Hash run. Fortunately we have a lot of Aloe vera at home and I just apply aloe vera directly to the wound. IT HAS HEALED BEAUTIFULLY WITHOUT SCARS.

Aloe vera application can help in promoting tissue repair, decreased inflammation of the wound bed, self debridement, and minimizes any infection occurance.

Nike Free

I bought a pair of Nike Free 4 trainers. Feel like running on barefeet and not much cushion when running on the treadmill but very good for Body Attack as there is more grip and pivot control.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nike Free is technology developed by Nike and incorporated into some of their atheletic shoes. Nike Free simulates barefoot running while wearing a shoe.

As this shoe allows the muscles in the foot to gain strength by providing less constriction, runners are advised to gradually break into the shoe rather than immediately running long distances as to prevent muscle cramps and other discomforts. This is especially true for amateurs, as Nike Free shoes do not provide as much cushion and shock absorption as the traditional running shoes.

In 2006 Nike released a new version of the shoe, the Nike Free V2, that addressed some of the durability issues in the earlier model. Among other changes, the heel and sidewalls of the shoe were redesigned to prevent tearing.

In 2007, Nike released a 3rd edition of the shoe, Nike Free V3, which is an update to the V2.

______________________________________________________________________

About the Nike scale

The Nike shoe scale goes from 10.0 to 1.0 with a '10' being a fully supportive shoe, and '0' being completely barefoot.

Example: The 5.0 Nike Free is like running halfway barefoot, the 3.0 is even less shoe, and the 7.0 is a bit more supportive.

Versions of the Nike Free

  • Nike Men/Women Free 7.0 (running)
  • Nike Men/Women Free 7.0 Trainer (cross training)
  • Nike Men/Women Free 5.0 (running)
  • Nike Men/Women Free Trainer 5.0 (cross training)
  • Nike Men/Women Free Trail 5.0 (light trail running)
  • Nike Men/Women Free 5.0 v2 (running)
  • Nike Men/Women Free 5.0 v3 (running)
  • Nike Men/Women Free Trainer 5.0 v2 (cross training)
  • Nike Men/Women Free 4.0 (running)
  • Nike Men/Women Free 4.0 Trainer (cross training)
  • Nike Men/Women Free 3.0 (running)

Nike's numbering system is designed with a 10 being the average shoe and a 0 being barefoot.

LesMills Body Attack

I had not done Body Attack for a month as I have been super busy, but it was good to use Body Attack sessions to get back into fitness. I find all the swimming and running fine but it does not help push the body and raise fitness levels like Body Attack.

I would like to attend once a week but due to work and traveling commitments it is a luxury to find time to go even at night.

Benefits of Body Attack
  • Burn calories for a leaner body
  • Tone and shape
  • Raise overall fitness and stamina for high energy spots like football or tennis
  • Improve coordination and agility
  • Enhance bone health and density
  • Increase heart and lung capacity through a full-body cardio worout through a full-body cardio workout.

Are You Eating Right For Your Joint? Rheumathoid Arthritis - Omega 6 oils

Oils containing the omega-6 fatty acid gamma linolenic acid (GLA), such as borage oil, black currant seed oil and evening primrose oil (EPO), have also been reported to be effective in the treatment of RA. The most pronounced effects were seen with borage oil.

GLA appears to be effective because it is converted in part to prostaglandin E1, a compound known to have anti-inflammatory activity. Supplementation with GLA often allows a patient to reduce their dosage of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Furthermore, animal studies show that GLA protects the stomach lining against gastric acid, reducing the side effects of prescription and over-the-counter NSAIDs, such as aspirin. GLA is therefore useful in conjunction with conventional arthritis medications.

Are You Eating Right For Your Joint? Rheumathoid Arthritis - NZ Green Lipped Mussel

New Zealand green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) may be beneficial for people with rheumatoid arthritis. It significantly improved RA symptoms in 68% of participants in a double-blind trial. Since this trial was published, other studies have been carried out, some of which confirmed these findings.

Are You Eating Right For Your Joint? Rheumathoid Arthritis - Omega 3 fish oil

Many double-blind trials have shown that omega-3 fatty acids in Fish oil, called EPA and DHA, help relieve symptoms of RA. The effect results from the anti-inflammatory activity of Fish oil. Many doctors recommend 3 grams per day of EPA and DHA; this amount is commonly found in 10 grams of Fish oil. Positive results can take three months to become evident.

Are You Eating Right For Your Joint? Rhuemathoid Arthritis: Vitamin E

Nutritional supplements and other natural therapies that may be helpful: The concentration of vitamin E has been found to be low in the joint fluid of individuals with rheumatoid arthritis.

This reduction in vitamin E levels is believed to be caused by utilization of the vitamin during the inflammatory process. In a double-blind study, approximately 1,800 IU per day of vitamin E was found to have a beneficial effect in people with RA. Two other double-blind studies using similar high levels of vitamin E reported that vitamin E appeared to have approximately the same effectiveness as anti-inflammatory drugs used to treat RA.

Are You Eating Right For Your Joint? Osteoarthritis - NZ Green Lipped Mussel Oil

For more than twenty years freeze-dried concentrated mussel powder has been used as a natural food supplement for the prevention of pain normally associated with older individuals’ experiencing joint discomfort.

Following many years of international scientific research by independent scientists, the goal of identifying the principal components responsible for the extract's high potency was achieved. What resulted was New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel Oil.

Green Lipped Mussel Oil is:
- 250 times more potent than the original Green Mussel Extract.
- 350 more potent than Evening primrose Oil.
- 400 times more potent than flax oil.

NZ Green Lipped Mussel Oil has been clinically trialed in a number of countries around the world. It has been available to the public for 3 years and the only reported side effect from the clinical studies was one case of nausea. When taken at the recommended dose rates NZ Green Lipped Mussel Oil appears to be remarkably free of side effects.

What are the advantages of NZ Green Lipped Mussel Oil over mussel powder?

- Mussel powders contain proteins, which can cause allergic reactions in some people. Since NZ Green Lipped Mussel Oil is oil all the proteins have been removed

- Mussel powders contain sea salt, which can be a problem for people needing to stay on a low salt diet. NZ Green Lipped Mussel Oil contains no sea salts

- Because NZ Green Lipped Mussel Oil is a potent concentrate, the dose rate is far lower and the capsules are easier to take.

- The unpleasant odours associated with encapsulated mussel powders have been removed.

LANDMARK STUDY ON NZ GREEN LIPPED MUSSEL OIL

The first double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial of NZ Green Lipped Mussel Oil in patients with Osteoarthritis (OA) confirms its effectiveness in the treatment of pain and in increased mobility in patients suffering from OA and other chronic inflammatory diseases. Professor C.S. Lau, co-chief; Division of Rheumatology, the Dept. of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong, facilitated the study.

The clinical trial was conducted from 2001-2003 at the Queen Mary Hospital of the University of Hong Kong . Eighty patients with knee OA were randomized to receive either NZ Green Lipped Mussel Oil or placebo for six months. All were allowed paracetamol/acetaminophen rescue treatment during the study and were reviewed at week 0, 2, 4, 8, 12, 18 and 24 for arthritis assessment and safety evaluation. Assessment of the patients' arthritis included the use of a 100 mm visual analog scale (VAS) for pain, patient's and physician's global assessment of arthritis, a validated Chinese version of the Oxford Knee Score (COKS), a validated Chine version of the Arthritis Impact Measurement Scale 2-short form (CAIMS2-SF), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP).

Clinical Trial Results

There was a greater improvement in the perception of pain as measured by the VAS. Patients' global assessment of arthritis in those who took NZ Green Lipped Mussel Oil when compared with controls from week four following adjustment for the change in the amount of paracetamol/acetaminophen used between study visits. Patients who took NZ Green Lipped Mussel Oil but not placebo also had improved scores in the CAIMS2-SF physical function and psychological status domains from week four.

When used over six months, NZ Green Lipped Mussel Oil was safe and well tolerated with no serious side effects reported.

How NZ Green Lipped Mussel Oil Works?

The process of inflammation is highly complex and is defined as the body's reaction to physical, chemical or biological injury which, in a normal healthy individual, results in the localization of the problem and regeneration or repair of the damaged tissue. Unfortunately, inflammatory response is not always beneficial to the individual.

A prime example is that of osteoarthritis, an inflammatory disease which can effect all the bone joints of the human body but primarily affects the "wear and tear" joints of the feet, knees, hands, hips, shoulders, elbows and back which have usually had the effects of many years of work and sometimes injury.

In certain circumstances, the process itself can cause damage and injury. The auto-immune disease, rheumatoid arthritis, where the body attacks itself, and the hypersensitive states leading to asthma and anaphylactic shock, are examples of uncontrolled inflammatory responses.

Initiation and control of the inflammatory process is complex and governed by an array of biomolecular mechanisms. One important pro-inflammatory mechanism is closely associated with cell-membrane bound arachidonic acid, which becomes converted into other compounds in the body which are potent inflammation-supporting substances.

This occurs by two major pathways in our metabolism:

The 5-lipoxygenase pathway leading to the formation of leukotrienes, and
The cyclo-oxygenase pathway which leads to the formation of prostaglandins and thromboxanes

Many of the products of these pathways have potent inflammation-supporting properties. For instance, LTB 4 is a potent chemotactic agent capable of attracting large numbers of leucocytes (white blood cells), to the site of the injury. LTC 4, LTD 4, and LTE 4, which are metabolites of LTB 4, are potent bronchoconstricting agents and were formerly identified as SRS-A's (slow reacting substance of anaphylaxis), a key factor in anaphylactic shock.

Currently used anti-inflammatory drugs function mainly by inhibiting the cyclo-oxygenase pathway. In view of the important functions of the inflammatory process ascribed to the lipoxygenase pathway, there has been considerable scientific effort to develop a 5-lipoxygenase pathway inhibitor over the past decade. NZ Green Lipped Mussel Oil is a 5-lipoxygenase pathway inhibitor which is both effective and safe.

Are You Eating Right For Your Joint? Osteoarthritis - NZ Green Lipped Mussel

The effects of New Zealand green-lipped mussel supplements have been studied in people with OA. In a preliminary trial, either a lipid extract (210 mg per day) or a freeze-dried powder (1,150 mg per day) of green-lipped mussel reduced joint tenderness and morning stiffness, as well as improving overall function in most participants. In a double-blind trial, 45% of people with OA who took a green-lipped mussel extract (350 mg three times per day for three months) reportedly had improvements in pain and stiffness. Another double-blind trial reported excellent results from green-lipped mussel extract (2,100 mg per day for six months) for pain associated with arthritis of the knee.

Side effects, such as stomach upset, gout, skin rashes, and one case of hepatitis have been reported in people taking certain New Zealand green-lipped mussel extracts.

Are You Eating Right For Your Joint? Osteoarthritis - Omega-3 Fish Oil

The omega-3 fatty acids present in fish oil, EPA and DHA, have anti-inflammatory effects and have been studied primarily for rheumatoid arthritis, which involves significant inflammation. However, OA also includes some inflammation. In a 24-week controlled but preliminary trial studying people with OA, people taking EPA had “strikingly lower” pain scores than people who took placebo. However, in a double-blind trial by the same research group, supplementation with 10 ml of cod liver oil per day was no more effective than a placebo.

Overall, it appears that omega-3 fish oil does not seem beneficial for osteoarthritis.

Are You Eating Right For Your Joint? Supplements:Osteoarthritis - Antioxidants

People who have OA and eat large amounts of antioxidants in food have been reported to exhibit a much slower rate of joint deterioration, particularly in the knees, compared with people eating foods containing lower amounts of antioxidants. Of the individual antioxidants, only vitamin E has been studied as a supplement in controlled trials. Vitamin E supplementation has reduced symptoms of OA in both single-blind and double-blind research. In these trials, 400 to 1,600 IU of vitamin E per day was used. Clinical effects were obtained within several weeks.
